Three hours east of Hollywood, near the desert communities of Palm Springs and Indio, the La Quinta Country Club is a lush retreat, offering a peaceful respite from the crowded city. While many argue the meaning of "La Quinta', one definition seems appropriate. In some parts of South America, the phrase refers to a complex of homes in the oldest district of the city. Of the many country clubs in the area, the La Quinta stands out like a magnificent hacienda from the golden days of Spanish California, rich in history and wealthy in natural beauty. The homes along the course form a unique community of gracious houses and condominiums.

The San Gorgonio, Little San Bernardino, Santa Rosa, and San Jacinto Mountains surround the lush green hills of the golf course. The desert heat subsides in the winter to the warmest winters in the western states, offering 350 says of sun annually. Brilliant blue skies blanket the community while snow buries much of the country.

Originally developed in 1959 as part of the La Quinta Resort and Club, the La Quinta Country Club was a gem of the palm desert. The course attracted a variety of high-profile golfers, celebrities and politicians, including President Eisenhower, who was on hand for the course'€™s dedication in 1960. In 1964, the course became part of the Palm Springs Golf Classic, later known as the Bob Hope Classic, now known as the Humana Challenge. For 48 years, the club has continued to host this PGA event. In 1977, the members purchased the club and continue to operate it as a member owned and member managed private country club.

There are 515 homes along the La Quinta Country Club course and its neighboring course. Residents can live along the courses in homes and condominiums at Golf Estates, Lago La Quinta, and Montero Estates. The Montero estates are custom homes built along the fairways at the southeastern part of the La Quinta Country Club. Lago La Quinta and the Golf Estates also border the fairways. Many of the condominiums were built in the 1960s and 70s, but have undergone extensive remodeling to provide residents with all of the modern conveniences they should be able to expect from exclusive properties.

Condominium prices start at around $265,000 for two-bedrooms, baths, and 1,750 square feet. Home prices start at approximately $500,000 and move into the multi-million dollar range based on size and location. Homes and condominiums are typically of traditional Spanish hacienda styling with red tile roofs, but some feature designs that are more contemporary.

Each home is an adventure in luxury with special features such as vaulted ceilings, magnificent chandeliers, rich hardwood cabinetry and flooring and, naturally, enormous windows through which you can enjoy the gorgeous views. Expect square footage of 3,500 feet or more with four bedrooms and as many baths, great rooms and specialty rooms such as in-home gyms, libraries, game rooms or offices. Walk-in closets, pantries and ample storage make these homes as functional as they are beautiful.

Club Amenities

While proud of the history of the club, the member owners are acutely aware that in order to maintain its status as one of the finest clubs in the area, it must be meticulously maintained and constantly improved. Three recent additions to the amenities are the croquet lawn, bocce court and floor lights for putting at night. With these lights, members can practice long after the sun goes down.

These new offerings join the list of services the club already offered such as the deep tissue massages, hair and nail care at the spa. A full fitness center offers yoga, Pilates and tai chi courses as well as personal fitness trainers.

Dining at the club is always a pleasant experience, whether for intimate dinners, small parties or any special occasion. Within the two-story clubhouse are several options for sophisticated entertaining. The 37,000 square foot facility in Santa Barbara style enjoys beautiful views of the golf course. Private venues include a dining area for groups of 14-20, a patio for 48-75, a dining room for 80-150 and the Eisenhower pavilion for a reception, dinner and dancing for 225-300 guests. The elegant facilities have seen many weddings, exclusive private events and political fundraisers.

Reasonable HOA fees, gated communities and security guards add to the security and privacy residents enjoy in La Quinta Country Club homes, accurately known as the gem of Palm Desert.
