The Tradition Golf Club is the home of resident Arnold Palmer's signature 18-hole golf course nestled in the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains. This exclusive community was designed from the historic Hacienda del Gato that is still on site next to the clubhouse.

The par-72 course takes in the mountain terrain and the changes in elevation. The signature 17th hole has an elevated tee and a fairway 200 feet below with mountains on one side and bunkers on the other. This hole is said to have one of the best views in the Coachella Valley.

All of the holes are carefully designed with old trees, lakes and August White bunker sand to make the best use of the rugged mountain terrain.

Arnold Palmer also designed a nine-hole course with a par-27 for golfers to practice their short game. The longest hole on this course is only 125 yards providing a different type of challenge for golfers used to long fairways.

History

The clubhouse for the Tradition Golf Club was completed and opened in 1997 to complement the historic hacienda. The famed Hacienda del Gato, part of the 320-acre ranch, dates back to 1920 when the owners of the land constructed a small home. Real estate and oil millionaire William Rosecrans and his wife Elizabeth bought the ranch in 1938 and expanded the house.

Elizabeth renamed the estate Hacienda del Gato when her cat killed a rattlesnake that was prepared to strike at her. The cat lived for 20 years and was buried with "honors" near the swimming pool.

Rosecrans was responsible for relocating old grassless fan palm trees and other old specimen trees onto the property. He was also responsible for importing lighting fixtures and furniture from Europe for the hacienda.

Hollywood celebrities, Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy visited this estate at different times.

Homes on the course

Tradition has luxury custom homes bordering the fairways. Homes blend Early California, hacienda and contemporary designs to create unique properties starting around $1.2 million to $10 million. Custom homes range in size from approximately 3,000 to over 11,000 square feet. Four and five bedrooms and three or four bathrooms are usually found in Tradition Golf Club custom homes. Lots are still available for building custom homes.

The California Village is a collection of homes at the top of the community. These are often seasonal homes with a homeowners association that cares for the property while owners are away during the summer season.

A small group of Tradition bungalow homes, approximately 2,500 square feet in size, are located near the clubhouse for easy access to the golf courses.

The Tradition Club

This club is limited to 250 members. The facility includes the Hacienda Dining Room, a restaurant under the direction of Chef Jose Sanchez who also gives cooking classes. Fine dining includes gourmet meals and an impressive wine list.

The club features a swimming pool, a 5,400 square-foot fitness center facility with workout machines and a spa for messages and rejuvenation treatments. Classes are given in yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and even "boot camp" exercises.

The club created the Arnold Palmer Education Fund for employees and their children. This includes college scholarships and other educational assistance.  The Fund offers classes in English to employees who want to improve their language skills.

The Mulligan Program was created at the Tradition Golf Club to help members recycle items they no longer use. This includes clothing, accessories, small appliances, and other items that can be donated.

Club activities and tournaments

"Yappy Hour" takes place at the club's Date Palm Grove where residents can bring their dogs while they enjoy cocktails.

Arnold Palmer is a member at the Tradition Golf Club and the annual Arnold Palmer Pro-Am Tournament is played in January to support his scholarship fund and other organizations.

The tournament has raised money for Martha's Village and Kitchen and Shelter from the Storm charitable organizations.

The Kings Crown Tournament has 60 members selected by lottery for two-person teams. This is a four-day event with ten six-man teams in match play. The teams play five matches and a final rubber match on the last day.

Other events include a "welcome back" party and opposite gender golf scramble at the beginning of the season. The Coyote Cup, Talking Rock Invitational, and Couples Holiday Scramble are popular tournaments.

The Bandits, a group of golfers at Tradition Golf Club, holds a 2-Best Ball tournament on Fridays. Twilight Golf begins in late March with four to six persons scrambles on Fridays. Players celebrate with a dinner after the game.

Tradition Golf Club is one of La Quinta's most desirable neighborhoods for people who enjoy golf and desert living.
